More on the Vineyard

Because of these variations, careful plans were developed to match terrain to varietal and rootstock. Each of the vineyard’s five varietals have different requirements and are fussy about where they will thrive. But it was essential in the Sodaro’s plans that these classic varieties be represented in the flavor palette available to the winemaker.
The original planting held some surprises. Where a varietal didn’t do as well as expected, the vines were “t-budded”, grafted, to a more suitable grape. Over the first few vintages, the dialogue between winemaker and vineyard management resulted in a fine-tuning of vineyard practices and a better understanding of this unique property’s characteristics, all in the pursuit of an ideal wine.
The viticultural philosophy is that of sustainable framing practices that emphasize soil health over chemicals.
The Coombsville Appellation soil is very acidic and low in organic materials. Before the vineyard was planted, soil tests revealed where and what amendments would be necessary. Ongoing applications of compost, beneficial microbes and a cover-crop regimen are designed to improve the quality of the soil and keep it healthy and productive in the long term.
The ultimate goal in each vintage is to maximize even ripening of the fruit. Perfectly ripened grapes have no vegetal flavors, low acids, non-aggressive tannins and rich dark fruit flavors.
